‘How
do I get a “secure” job?’ is the cry in today’s uncertain times. But you’ve
probably heard that there isn’t really any such thing as a truly secure job
anymore. Sadly, that’s probably true. Therefore, job security is something that
you have to make for yourself; it isn’t out there waiting for you. The secure
jobs that are left in the market are way below your pay grade and your notice.
So take your new job and make it secure.
1.
Keep in mind that your objective
is to secure not your job, but your future. No matter what the future holds,
you need to have a plan: a back up for your back up, so to speak.
2.
Even if you’re holding down a
steady job, make contacts for yourself in your chosen industry. You never know
when they might be able to help you out.
3.
Start creating a brand image
for yourself; a good professional reputation will hold you in good stead. How
people perceive you is more important these days than who you really are.
4.
Ensure your financial security
with carefully planned savings and a diverse portfolio of investments. It is
better to save now and spend later.
The most important thing is to keep your
short term and long term objectives in mind, and to keep to them. The answer to
the question: ‘How do I get a secure job?’
is probably ‘You can’t’, but instead of securing your job, you can secure your
future.
